How to Identify If Your Well-Water Needs Testing

Water is essential for life in all forms, but it’s also a commodity many people take for granted until their water supply dries. Unfortunately, this is a common problem, as private wells are susceptible to contamination and other issues that can cause problems with your water quality.

The EPA protects public water systems by enforcing regular testing and maintenance standards. But private wells are not regulated by the EPA, and it is up to you as the owner to ensure your water is safe to drink.

At a minimum, you should check your well once a year for mechanical problems and overall levels. You should have your water tested if:

  • There are known problems with well water in your area.
  • Problems have been reported near your well.
  • You make any repairs or replacements to your well system.
  • You notice that the water has a strange taste, smell, or different appearance.
